What To Know
What to know aboutSame-Day Crowns
Same-day crowns let you walk in with a damaged tooth and walk out with a permanent, custom crown in a single visit, with no temporary crown, no second appointment and no weeks of waiting. The treatment combines digital scanning, computer-aided design and in-office milling to create your crown while you wait. At Veda Dental Studio in Savannah, GA, the process replaces the traditional crown experience entirely. Instead of messy impression trays, we take a fast, comfortable digital scan of your tooth. Instead of sending that impression to an outside lab and fitting you with a temporary crown for two to three weeks, we design your crown on screen, mill it from a solid block of high-quality ceramic right in our office, and bond it in place the same day, typically within about two hours. The ceramic material is strong, durable and color-matched to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. Same-day crowns are ideal for busy patients who cannot afford multiple appointments, anyone who dreads temporary crowns that come loose or feel rough, and anyone who simply wants their tooth fixed now. The result is the same lasting protection as a traditional crown, delivered in a fraction of the time.
Questions
Frequently askedquestions
Answers to the questions patients ask us most, so you feel prepared before your visit.
What is a same-day crown?
A same-day crown is a permanent ceramic crown designed, milled, and placed in a single visit using in-office digital technology. Instead of impressions, a lab, and a temporary crown, your tooth is digitally scanned, the crown is designed on screen and milled from a ceramic block in our office, and it is bonded in place the same day.
How long does a same-day crown appointment take?
Most same-day crown visits take about two hours from start to finish, including preparing the tooth, scanning, designing, milling, and bonding. Compare that to the traditional process, which requires two appointments spread over two to three weeks with a temporary crown in between. You leave the same day with your permanent crown in place.
Are same-day crowns as strong as lab-made crowns?
Yes. Same-day crowns are milled from solid blocks of high-quality ceramic that are strong, durable, and proven over decades of clinical use. With proper care they last as long as traditional lab-made crowns, typically 10 to 15 years or more. The material and fit, not where the crown was made, determine its longevity.
Will the crown match my natural teeth?
Yes. The ceramic blocks come in a full range of natural tooth shades, and we select the closest match to your surrounding teeth before milling. The crown is also polished and can be characterized for a lifelike appearance. Most patients cannot tell their same-day crown apart from their natural teeth once it is placed.
Why do traditional crowns take two visits?
The traditional process requires a physical impression to be sent to an outside dental lab, where technicians fabricate the crown over two to three weeks. During that wait you wear a temporary crown. Designing and milling the crown in our office eliminates the lab step entirely, which is what makes single-visit treatment possible.
What are the advantages of skipping the temporary crown?
Temporary crowns are a common source of frustration: they can come loose, feel rough, cause sensitivity, and require a soft-food diet. With a same-day crown there is no temporary at all. Your tooth is permanently restored before you leave, with one round of numbing, one appointment, and nothing to be careful with while you wait.
Can every tooth get a same-day crown?
Most teeth that need a crown can be treated in a single visit, including molars. A small number of complex cases, such as certain cosmetic front-tooth situations or restorations requiring specific materials, may still benefit from a lab-made crown. We will tell you honestly which approach is best for your specific tooth.
How do I care for my same-day crown?
Care for it like a natural tooth: brush twice daily, floss daily including around the crown, and keep regular dental checkups. Avoid chewing ice or extremely hard objects, and wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth. With good care, your same-day crown will protect your tooth for many years.
